Lectures

There have been many lectures over the years. Here, I will list a few, particularly those that were recorded. My lecture activities provided the opportunity for many travels across Europe, as well as to Egypt, Argentina, India, Iceland, Cameroon, Lebanon, Morocco, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, Tunisia, and the USA. A special format of my “lectures” are my exhibition tours, which we at KOW for a time also staged for the camera.

Negotiating Commons. Conflict, Art & Mediation in Neighbourhood Democracy

Negotiating Commons. Conflict, Art & Mediation in Neighbourhood Democracy

For many citizens, the proximate social world – the neighbourhood – is not a given safe haven. It is a constellation made from bonds and antagonisms alike. It is a space marked by layers of silent, simmering conflicts, some of which may escalate at any given moment. Today, the growing social divide and violence in Germany present a challenge not only to local daily life, but also to the role of artists and the arts. The New Patrons methodology of citizen commissioned art is based on mediation processes within local communities. By taking responsibility for their situation and collaborating with local stakeholders and progressive international artists, citizens-patrons contribute to a democratic model of action in which conflicts, desires, and new perspectives can be examined and potentially transformed.

NFTs As a Tool For Decolonizing The Museum

In February 2022, the Congolese Plantation Workers Art League (CATPC) minted the Balot NFT – a first case of digital restitution. The original Balot sculpture, created in 1931 in the Democratic Republic of Congo as a protective force against colonial violence, is now owned by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (USA). After the institution refused to loan the object for an exhibition at CATPC’s own museum in Congo, local artists created the Balot NFT to establish digital ownership of the sculpture and, through the sale of an NFT edition, to generate new resources for the independent and sustainable development of the local community.

The Annoying Gift: How to Offend a Village Community

In 1997, the Swiss artist Rémy Zaugg was commissioned to design a sculpture for the washhouse of a village in Burgundy. Instead of accepting the commission, he wrote the villagers a letter that truly “cleaned up” – telling them the truth about their decaying living environment. This marked the beginning of one of the most remarkable projects of the New Patrons.

New Patrons – A Paradigm Shift in Cultural Production

"The New Patrons program provides citizens with the opportunity to realize their cultural and artistic visions in collaboration with internationally renowned artists. Citizens are themselves the patrons of these projects. Giving people from all walks of life the chance to participate in the creation of contemporary art — like so many private and public patrons before them — represents a radical shift. The sociologist and philosopher Bruno Latour sees it as the start of a new chapter in art and social history, one in which the population at large becomes the initiator of a democratically representative production of art. Community members work together with mediators and artists as equal partners in the creation of public goods. The process overcomes institutionalized patterns of social exclusion and puts cultural participation back on its feet: people no longer merely consume art; they … read more

New Patrons Lecture at Experimenter Curators’ Hub Kolkata, India

Experimenter Curators’ Hub is a platform in developing and sustaining discourse on curatorial practice and exhibition-making through critical discussion and debate. Structured as a deeply intensive program, every year the hub invites some of the foremost curators of the world to present their practice with reference to recent exhibitions curated by them. The audience at Experimenter Curators’ Hub plays an active role in this exchange and contributes significantly to the conversations. The final day ends with a moderated panel discussion with all the participating curators reflecting on the key aspects that emerged over the hub.
